The International School of Beaverton (ISB) is a middle school/high school in the Beaverton School District. It is the only school in the district to offer both the IB Middle Years Programme and IB Diploma Programme courses. It serves sixth through twelfth grade. However, when the school was first opened in 2006, it only served sixth grade through ninth grade. Each grade beyond ninth grade was opened progressively as the students advanced through high school, so that by 2009, the school served all grades six through twelve. The school mascot is the dragon, and the school colors are red and black (which are used as the rival team names for Field Day). The current principal is Jill O'Neill.[1]
The school offers various standard courses in the areas of English (aka. Writing, or Literature), Math (such as Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Calculus, Trigonometry, et cetera), Science, (such as Biology or Chemistry), Social or Global Studies (with areas such as World History, US History, and Humanities), Physical Education and Health, as well as electives such as "Band", "Art", or "Choir". ISB also offers language courses, which included Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. These courses extend beyond the United States standard of four consecutive years of study, and go into two additional years of International Baccalaureate curriculum.
Students in sixth grade are placed in standard level classes, but they have the option to choose whether to take the Band elective for the whole of their year, or to take Choir and Art each for a semester. Sixth grade students will also have the opportunity to try out each language course for a trimester before deciding which language they wish to take for the rest of their schooling. Forecasting is done at the end of each year, to see which language and elective courses students wish to take for seventh grade.
As of the 2010-2011 school year, the International School of Beaverton's total enrollment was 771 students (480 in middle school, 291 in high school). In middle school, 48% of the students were Caucasian, 28% were Asian or Pacific Islander, 13% were Hispanic, 9% were of varying ethnicities, and 1% were African American. In high school, 46% of the students were Caucasian, 22% were Asian or Pacific Islander, 20% were Hispanic, 9% were of varying ethnicities, 2% were African American, and 1% were American Indian.[2]
